THE ART OF REPETITION - a way to confidence by doing
Whether you cook, clean, coach, teach, play sport, fix cars, sell houses, raise kids – you get better simply by doing, and failing a lot while you’re at it. The best way to learn is through past mistakes. “Hey now I know what not to do”, “Oh, I see, this is not working”. But in order to come to these conclusions, we need repetition.
Now, repetition sounds simple enough, but in reality it requires a sacrifice of much valuable time. These days you will often hear the infamous “I’m busy” excuse, which is a perfect killer of any kind of practice, consistency and, yes, repetition. Because of our “business”, we often don’t allow our craft (whatever it may be) to flourish under the nourishment of repetition.
Repetition requires good time management and prioritizing. Prioritizing and time management require answer to the key questions: “Why am I doing this?”, “What are am I trying to achieve?” “Why is that important to me?”, as we tend do things that we love, that are important and that have a purpose.
Repetition also requires commitment, punctuality and discipline.
Commitment to our “prioritized schedule” - following through with the plan
Punctuality is needed to be able to do and finish things within the allocated time
Discipline is required to do repetition with intention and focus
Repetition also requires accountability:
Self accountability – which goes back to your why, your priorities and your commitment.
Accountability partner – finding a friend/partner/peer that has similar goals, who understands your why, who is there to remind you of your why, and it’s going to give you honest feedback.
Authority accountability – a coach, doctor, therapist, mentor. Somebody with greater expertise in a particular field/skill that can give you constructive criticism, help set your goals and evaluate your progress.
Repetition, a simple but demanding skill, is definitely a key ingredient to mastering anything, and thus key asset to any kind of success. Real confidence is only built through repetition. We should put effort into not allowing our excuse building minds to keep us from perfecting anything we strive to be great at through daily repetition.
